A major earthquake hit Greece and Turkey on Friday, October 30. There are reports of several buildings being demolished in the Izmir, third largest city of Turkey due to a powerful earthquake.
The earthquake was felt across the eastern Greek islands and even in the Greek capital Athens. According to the US Geological Survey, 7.0 magnitude quake was registered 14 kilometres (8.6 miles) off the Greek town of Karlovasi on Samos.
According to the Mayor of Izmir, there are reports of 20 buildings being destroyed. However, according to the news agency Reuters, Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said that six buildings in the two districts of Izmir, located on the coast, have been destroyed.
Turkey’s Disaster Management Department has said that relief and rescue teams have been sent to the earthquake affected places.
