High-profile medic Professor Jim Dornan and the father of actor Jamie Dornan, who starred in the Fifty Shades of Grey movies, passed away after having suffered Covid-19. He was a respected obstetrician and gynecologist, and was also known for his charity work.
A few days ago, it was announced that Dornan had been infected with the coronavirus. On Monday morning, the Northern Ireland foundation Leukemia & Lymphoma NI announced that the professor had passed away at the age of 73.
Posting on social media this morning, Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI wrote: “Incredibly sad news to share this morning as we learnt of the passing of Professor Jim Dornan.
“Jim was a passionate patron, advocate and long time friend to all at Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI.
“A champion for many local charities and causes in NI, Jim always gave his time and advice freely with big smile and plenty of fun.
“He leaves a lasting legacy to the charity sector, the medical sector and to his family, friends and colleagues.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Jim’s family and friends at this very sad time. RIP Jim.”
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Foundation deals with blood cancer research. In 2005, Jim Dornan was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and he has been actively supporting this organization for years.
Jim Dornan worked for years as a gynecologist and obstetrician in Belfast. From 1995 to 2012, he lectured in fetal medicine at Queen’s University there, and from 2004 to 2006 he was the senior vice president of the British Obstetrics and Gynecology Association RCOG, and collaborated with the NIPanC foundation, which promotes awareness of pancreatic cancer. In 1998, his wife, Jamie Dornan’s mother, Lorna, died after battling the disease.
As soon as the media heard the news of Jim Dornan’s death, condolences swarmed the web. Many appreciated the professor’s contribution to the development of British medicine, calling him a “visionary”, “shining light in the world of medicine” or “a man who sacrificed his own life to make the lives of others better”.
Dornan had three children: Jamie, Liesa and Jessica. He also left a second wife, Samina, in mourning.
