Protests are on in Lakshadweep against the new law reforms. Islanders are protesting against Administrator Praful Patel’s actions, including the easing of COVID restrictions and the implementation of the Goonda Act.
The current test positivity rate in Lakshadweep is 68 per cent, which has kept the disease overseas for a year even when the entire country is submerged in COVID. Praful Patel, the island’s administrator, granted a waiver to the restrictions imposed on those who were in the quarantine in Kochi.
It is alleged that this is the reason for the sharp spread. The first law reform of the administrator since taking office was the implementation of the Goonda Act. Islanders allege that the goons’ act was undemocratic on an island where no crime was reported.
The Lakshadweep Students Association’s online protest campaign continues to demand the restoration of democracy in Lakshadweep. During the Corona era, the student revolution was organized in the name of homecoming.
Former Gujarat Home Minister Praful Patel was appointed Lakshadweep’s administrator by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last December following the death of former Lakshadweep administrator Dineshwar Sharma due to lung disease.
