England bounced back leading the first innings by 27 runs. Captain Joe Root 180*(321) led from the front. His partnership with Johny Bairstow 57(107) and Moen Ali 27(72) put England in commanding position. However, Indian bowlers made comeback in the game taking 5 wickets in the final session of third day, restricted England’s lead in first innings.
In the second innings, India lost top 3 batsmen in morning session at 55/3. However, out of form Cheteshwar Pujara 45(206) and Ajinkya Rahane 61(146) had other things in mind, solidifying Indian innings slowly but steadily. Pujara and Rahane put up century partnership to lead the recovery. However, the game again took another turn when Pujara, Rahane and Jadeja fell in quick succession.
On last day of game, India made surprise comeback when unlikely heros of Mohammed Shami 56(70) and Jasprit Bumrah 34(64) helped India to position where they couldn’t lose the match. England had target of 272 to win the match in 60 overs.
And Indian fast bowlers swept the England batting line up, with some resistance from Root and Buttler, taking all the 10 wickets in 51.5 overs of the innings.
