December 3 is International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), and is observed to promote the rights and well-being of people with disabilities at every level of society and development.
It also aims to raise awareness of the situations of persons with disabilities in all aspects of political, social, economic and cultural life.
I urge all countries to fully implement the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, increase accessibility, and dismantle legal, social, economic and other barriers with the active involvement of persons with disabilities and their representative organizations.UN Secretary General Añtonio Guterres
The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3.
In 2006, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) was also adopted, which aims at working towards creating equal opportunities for persons with disabilities through the implementation of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.
Since 1998, the day is observed every year with a particular theme.
This year’s theme for IDPD 2021 is “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.”
“As governments and the international community continue to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, and chart a course forward, it is essential that disability inclusion is central to health system planning, development, and decision making. Strong, effective health systems support robust health emergencies management”, World Health Organisation (WHO) said.
Secretary- General Añtonio Guterres on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities emphasised on disability-inclusive response to pandemic to create more accessible post-pandemic world.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi too marked International Day of Persons with Disabilities while appreciating the stellar achievements and contributions of persons with disabilities to India’s progress. He also took occasion to register his government’s work to further strengthening infrastructure which empowers persons with disabilities.
